If you’ve read my “about me” page, you’ll notice I have a motto: "If it’s on your mind, it’s probably worth talking about.” What do I mean by that, and why is it so important? I’ve always disliked it when people try to say, “Someone always has it worse than you,” or something along those lines. They (hopefully) do it with good intentions - hoping we gain perspective on our problems - but it does not have that effect, does it? Saying that to someone belittles what is happening to them. Even if, yes, objectively worse things have happened in this world. But within the context of your life, you have only ever dealt with the problems you face. And no matter what, we don’t always know how to deal with these problems or thoughts we have! Sometimes, when people think about seeing a counselor, they think they need a huge, big issue before they can see one. But the exact opposite is true! While big problems are always welcome, so are the small ones. So are the issues that might not seem like a problem, but they’re on your mind, and you feel like you could benefit from talking to someone. If something is on your mind, and you feel like speaking to someone would help, please find a counselor with whom you can share these thoughts! This is what my motto means. I want to create that safe space for you to feel like you can share what is on your mind. No matter what it is, I’m here to listen. You are important, and the things going on in your life are important. You deserve a space to talk about the things that are on your mind without fear of judgment. Ashley Klasing LPC-Associate |
